Most successful students or golfers have one thing in common: a role model who they can confide in and learn from. Good role models can inspire and motivate students or young golfers to pursue their potentials by working hard and staying disciplined. They show young people how to live with integrity, optimism, determination and compassion and serve as an example whose behavior is emulated by others. Role models play an essential part in a child’s positive development.
Some of the most influential and life changing role models are teachers. They are responsible for imparting many of life’s important lessons. Besides being role models, teachers can also do mentoring which is about one person helping another to achieve his or her goals. They are key individuals who can influence the attitudes, values and behavior of their students. However, it takes commitment and organization. Teachers should also be equipped with basic mentoring skills where students can cultivate the good characteristics of a successful person and pursue their academic excellence with more determination. This could be a huge contributing factor in preparation for their future career paths. There are plenty to be gained. Ultimately, these social influences can have a significant and positive impact on young students.
Role models are equally important to junior golfers psychologically. They are a source of inspiration. They can instill the values needed in the sport. In golf, Tiger Woods was a great role model to many young golfers. Also, Se Ri Park, who in 1998 won four Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournaments including the LPGA Championship and the US Women’s Open, created the golf explosion in Korea. She became an instant role model and today we see Korea has the largest number of players dominating the LPGA.
Malaysian golf needs more young people to be interested and involved in the game. There are lots of junior programs being conducted at schools and clubs in the country. Junior competitions are also being held regularly. Golf clubs are becoming more accessible to juniors. Some clubs are now taking the junior development program more keenly. Event sponsorships are increasingly available. The bottom line is the game of golf must continue to grow and attract the next generation of young golfers.
Many of our junior players lack the precise skills and sharpness needed to win tournaments. What we provide in terms of training, coaching, fitness, and facilities are comparable to if not better than many other countries. But what’s the problem? We often asked ourselves, what is missing? Not enough tournament exposure? Or they may lack the desire to win! Are our players weak mentally? Maybe, it’s their mental strength due to lack of emphasis on the mental approach and game plan during training. Some of these questions need answers very quickly.
So, how can we help? Maybe, we urgently need role models to give them a boost. It’s timely that our local professional golfers play their part. They can spend some valuable time with young players. The players can value their professional experience and knowledge of the game leading to a change for the better over time.
